F250 questions

Post by Big Bird »

I have an 09 F250. It came with a panel on the dash with 5 auxiliary power switches. When I installed my air bags I was going to tie into the switches for the compressor. But, each switch has wires going somewhere into the firewall. Does anyone know where I access the auxiliary power for the switches?

Next, Does anyone know of a good maintenance and repair manual? Or, where is the fuel filter on a power stroke engine? I want to replace it.

Thanks,

Big Bird

I have no idea wher the switches are wired to, my guess would be a common point either by the power dist bow or the fuse panel. As far as the fuel filter or multiples I just got acquainted with the 6.0 set ups, I have no idea where the 6.4 stuff is ......yet. After they put the oil filter on top of the engines next to a fuel filter and another fuel filter on the rail, heck they could be anywhere, check the glove box

The 6.4 diesel has two fuel filters. One is inside the frame rail under the driver's side door. It has a cap similar to the engine fuel filter. The cap screws into the rear of the appliance. The engine fuel filter sits on top of the engine, next to the oil filter. Both have the same type cap. It takes a 36mm hex socket to remove the screw on caps. The fuel filter on the engine is to your right as you look into the engine compartment, otherwise, driver's side. The caps have fine threads the are about one inch deep. Make sure you are level, and no pressure on the system. I usually depressurize with the water drain lever under the frame filter, draining into a coffee can. Tie back the wire loom to get better access to the frame filter. Ford filter kit # is FD4609, list cost $99. I got a break last time for $85 for the two filter kit. NAPA Auto parts sells WIX part # 3950, which looks the same. My price varies $55=$65 for the pair. They are packaged together as a kit both by WIX and Ford.

My understanding is the upfitter switches are not wired anywhere, but are there to conveniently tie into. Your owners manual offers some info, yet vague at best. No wires go through the firewall unless they have upgraded their upfitter switch set ups.

To all that have Ford diesels...Use only Motorcraft oil filters. I learnd the hard way. The aftermarket oil filters can be too short and not trip a valve located in the bottom of the filter housing. Saw it my self, at least 1/4 inch difference. This will create an oil starvation problem. Been there, done that, got the T shirt (bill)

Rich, I have been using the napa/wix filters on the trucks I maintain for my Landscaper for 2 years now. He has 4 6.0L 2 -2004 and 2-2006 models, how soon did you notice a problem? Nothing has been going on with his yet, and what brand were you using?? Now your talking oil or fuel filters causing the problem?

I have been ordering my filters from http://www.dieselfiltersonline.com. They have Motorcraft quite a lot cheaper than the dealer or you can get the Racor filters (they are the manufacturer of the Motorcraft filters) for even less. The Racor filter is the exact same filter you would get if you buy Motorcraft. The problem with some of the other brands of filters is explained in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvnTwCujBJE.

If I remember correct my upfitter switches were not wired out to the firewall, they were short wires under the dash close to the factory switches.

Rich, Good concerns on the filters. I looked at the WIX filters, but did not have the Motocraft one next to it for comparison. Obviously someone (Racor) manufactures parts, filters, etc. for the OEM groups. Finding them is not always easy, and some protect their dealers or major customers, like Ford. I learned early into my diesel experience, they are not cheaper to operate, but oh the extra power is nice,

Are you referring to the upfitter switches?

On my 2006 F350 they the wiring harness is inside the cab, under the dash drivers side. Hope this helps.
