My 05 CTD eng temp ran just like Mike said, 180 empty, about 200 towing, and 210 to 220 climbing with load. I always saw the eng temp go up when the boost went up, funny my Duramax does not follow that trend, runs about 195 regardless of load or grade. Trans temp on CTD was not monitored (manual), allison 6 speed auto runs 150 empty and 180 towing, saw 185 once during heavy climb towing.

MIKE you said till your fan kicks in. I have never seen an engine temp over 200 no matter what, and maybe that is why i never heared my fan kick in.
I was thinking maybe the fan clutch was bad can you hear it when the fan kicks in? and at what temp does it do so?
Thanks

Well, I was out towing today, for work not fun. Trailer weight didn't exceed 5000#, but the engine temp never varied from 200 degrees. Air temp was 84 degrees and sunny, the tranny temp was just a hair under 160.

Your engine is a year older than mine. I have the 48RE tranny but I also run the bully dog chip on towing setting. This has increased my mileage but it gives me a good monitor on everything in the engine. Do you have the HO Cummins?

My truck is the 04.5 325HP 600 TQ HO engine with the 48RE tranny. 3:73 rear gears and stock tires. I run the SP-stage 1 power box it has 5 power settings i really only use 1-3. I did install a 1400staul converter. i thought that would help my MPG but it didnt. I also thought maybe i had a bad converter and that is why my tranny temp ran higher then most but the new converter didnt help i think it runs hotter with this one by 5-10*

Diesel Dave, I also have an 04.5 CTD and just had the Double Deep Mag HY Tech pan installed and an Autometer gauge. I went to the cost last week across 299 from Redding, CA to Eureka and back. The outside temp was in the mid 80's.
The hottest my trans got was 210 on the return trip climbing a very long steep hill which I was told would be normal for that hill. Most of the time it runs between 160-180 while towing and 160 withoug the trailer.
It sounds like yours is running TOO HOT.

Dave my fan kicks in around the 220 degree mark. Yes you will hear it! Make sure you do not have any cotton wood fuzzies or bugs in your inter cooler as a side note.

In my 01 I was running hot the whole trip stopped and put in a thermostat that did not work then had a new clutch fan put in and that did not work. My son who was around 15 at the time (still thought diesels had spark plugs  ) found between my inter cooler was full of yuk. Rinsed it out and all was good again. Should have given him the flash light at the start of the trip could have saved myself 400.00.

Dave, I just looked at your profile and right away I could tell what your problem was. Don't look now but there is what appears to be a 2 city block long attachment to the back of your truck. Got to be the problem.

Just got back from Myrtle beach The trany temp never went above 195 even in stop and go trafic. Most times it was at 165 even towing. Im happy with that , I got 9.5 avj towing down and 9.3 towing home. running stock programing. I weighed this thing and it was 23,948 with a full tank of fuel and 1/2 tank of fresh water. It is big and heavy.
Im looking for a 02 7.3 Ford CC dually 4X4 to trade this in on, The kids just dont have enough room in the back seat.

Sounds like you had a good trip Dave. What was the final solution in bringing down you transmission temperature?

Interesting, did you also install the external cartridge transmission oil filter?
